Kokopelli
is one of several designs you might find on clothing, rugs and pottery
made by Native Americans of the Southwest.
The KOKOPELLI legend varies widely, as do most stories that have
been handed down through the ages. Some legends date back to the
third century. Most center around a trader that came from the south
with a back pack full of trade goods, hence the humped back.
Kokopelli traveled throughout the southwest visiting many Indian
cultures such as the Hopi, Zuni, Anasazi and Navajo. He would trade
the exotic wares he brought from the south which included sea shells,
coral and long, colorful parrot feathers.
After a days trading, which usually ended with an evening celebration,
he would choose a young woman to honor his affections. because of
his nightly escapades and the fact that Kokopelli always announced
his arrival by playing his flute, some cultures adopted the Kokopelli
with flute as a symbol of fertility.
Today Kokopelli still represents all that is good in an otherwise
chaotic world. His message is one of joy, happiness, abundance,
harmony, love and peace. Keeping his likeness close to you and those
you love conveys best wishes for a joyful and wonderful life. |
